Barry Kornbluh

(US, 1952)

Barry Kornbluh’s photography doesn't rush to tell a story; it invites you to sit with it. For over four decades, the American photographer has built a body of work defined by an intuitive, deeply poetic approach to light and shadow, creating grainy, black-and-white images that feel simultaneously intimate and mysterious.

His immersion into visual culture began with a degree in Art History, a background that quietly anchors his sense of composition. But it was New York City in 1977 where his practical education truly took shape. Diving into the archives of Magnum Photos, Kornbluh spent hours surrounded by twentieth-century masterpieces. Around the same time, he began studying under the legendary Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research. Model pushed her students to reject formula and lean entirely into intuition and personal vision—a philosophy that permanently shaped Kornbluh’s aesthetic.

Throughout the 1980s, Kornbluh worked behind the scenes assisting iconic photographers like Elliott Erwitt, Susan Meiselas, and Gilles Peress on heavy-hitting editorial and documentary assignments. Meanwhile, he spent his nights capturing the raw energy of the New York jazz scene and shooting portraits of the city's writers and artists, constantly refining a style that balances documentary clarity with a dreamlike edge.

A move to Amsterdam in the 1990s opened a new chapter. His focus shifted inward and grew more atmospheric, resulting in tender, deeply personal series of his family and friends, alongside evocative nudes and landscapes. Instead of relying on overt narratives, Kornbluh learned to communicate purely through gesture and mood.

While his roots remain firmly planted in traditional analogue photography and the tactile magic of the darkroom, Kornbluh has adapted with the times. In recent years, he has embraced digital printing, allowing him to scale up his work into larger formats while preserving the characteristic depth and subtlety of the original grain.

Since 2006, Kornbluh has been represented by the Gallery. From striking figurative studies to quiet landscapes, his photographs remain a masterclass in stillness, capturing the unseen, quiet rhythms of human experience.
