Born in The Hague, Gerard Petrus Fieret (1924–2009) was a Dutch photographer renowned for his unconventional and often provocative photographic work.

Fieret was a self-taught photographer whose work bordered on outsider art. He was known for his paranoia, often claiming that other photographers would steal his work. His mood could change abruptly, shifting from very polite and sophisticated, sometimes even posh, to something entirely different. Due to his paranoid disposition, he would stamp and sign his photos across the image. After years of claiming that his photos had been stolen, thousands of photos and negatives were found after his death in an abandoned glasshouse.

His confrontational approach was tactful and delicate, often capturing candid poses and intimate moments between him and his subjects.

His photos are best described as voyeuristic, capturing the most mundane scenes with a focus on women. He was particularly attracted to women's legs. Most of his printed photos, predominantly black and white, were unique due to the stamps and signatures on the work, and because there was often only a single print. He would cut negatives and walk over his prints, exhibiting behavior more akin to a painter than a photographer. His photographic oeuvre spans only about 10 years. In addition to his photography, he was an avid drawer, often on beer coasters, and wrote poetry. Fieret, like his extensive body of work, was absolutely unique.

In 1992, he received the Ouborg Award, a municipal award for visual artists from The Hague.

Fieret's work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including a monographic exhibition at LE BAL in Paris, which was the first to take place outside Holland. For his 80th birthday celebration, The Hague Museum of Photography held a retrospective of Fieret’s photographic collection, marking the first major retrospective of his work.

Fieret's unique approach to photography, combined with his eccentric personality, has left a lasting impact on the art world, making him a significant figure in Dutch and European photography.
