Katrien Vermeire (BE, 1979)
Katrien Vermeire studied photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, and Art History (BA) at Ghent University. The winner of the 4th annual Fine Arts Award of the Province of West-Flanders (BE) in 2002, she has been working as an independent artist since, developing a distinctive style that is not only highly poetic but also very varied and layered. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums both in Belgium and abroad, including a dual exhibition with Hans Op de Beeck and (solo) exhibitions at Museum M in Leuven and Foam Amsterdam. Her photo and film project The Wave, co-directed with Belgian visual artist Sarah Vanagt, premiered at the 18th Biennale of Sydney in 2012.
In 2011 Godspeed was selected by FOAM Amsterdam for Foam Magazine #28 Talent 2011. Using photography's fundamental ingredients of light and time, Katrien Vermeire allows the medium to make visible what would otherwise be invisible and catches the beauty of a special natural phenomenon. Bright yellow stripes represent the paths taken by fireflies during extended exposure.
